Shelly Fryer: room 108
This week I have had the pleasure to explore the blog of the wonderful Shelly Fryer. Mrs. Fryer spends a great amount of time making her classroom a welcome community for all who enter. You see, Shelly's classroom is located in Oklahoma's only school dedicated to helping homeless children. This means many students fluctuate in and out of the classroom. Potentially this could cause problems. Classroom community is a vital part in a successful learning environment. Even with the speed bump, Shelly has excelled at making her students feel as if the classroom were home.
Allowing the student's to create is important no matter the background. Shelly has poles cast in many different ponds when it comes to creating. My favorite of those channels has to be the Class Radio channel. Each episode is fairly short and features voice clips from students about some of their favorite things inside and outside of the classroom. Simple little ideas such as this allows students to feel as if they are part of something big. Something big they can be proud of. The radio show is great quality as well. I listened to a few posts (I would like to ask if I can join in on Force Fridays, my favorite character is R2D2) and they sounded like something I would listen to on any other public access station. I mean that to be a compliment seeing as those channels are produced by adults. I encourage you to listen to a few episodes yourself, it may even serve as inspiration for a future lesson. The channel is available here.
It's wonderful to see a teacher so welcoming to the use of technology in the classroom. Many post on the website show Shelly's love of using technology as a form of enrichment. If you wold like to see more of Shelly's work I encourage you to check out her website!
